Learn the history of the Jews in Sarajevo from the 16th century onwards, during a 2-hour walking tour of the districts they settled and the synagogues they built. Visit sites of the Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Explore the history of the Jews in Sarajevo, from the time of their arrival following their persecution in 15th-century Spain, through the torments of World War II, to their unique traditions in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina today.
Throughout the centuries, Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews have provided a great contribution to the development of Sarajevo. During the 16th century they were allowed freedom of movement and lived throughout the city, although the El Cortijo quarter was the site of the first synagogue.
They were among the first pharmacists in the city, and during the 19th century it was recorded that all doctors and physicians in Sarajevo were Jewish.
Among the sites you will visit as you learn more about the history are the Ashkenazi Synagogue on the banks of the River Miljacka, the Il Kal Grande Synagogue in the old Jewish quarter of Velika Avlija, and the Jewish palaces of Ferhadija Street. You will also visit the Jewish cemetery, a UNESCO tentative monument and see the original Sarajevo Haggadah, a UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
